Bard of Dorchester Visits Wey Valley

Wey Valley Academy Year 10 English students were inspired by a creative writing workshop delivered by Peter Roe and Rebecca Danicic - the Bard of Caer Dur. The aim of the Bardic Chair of Caer Dur is to encourage the arts of poetry, storytelling and music in Dorchester and the surrounding area of West Dorset. The origin of the role is pre-Roman and the bard of Durnovaria (Dorchester) was called 'Caer Dur'.
Rebecca Danicic and Peter Roe performed their own poetry in the oral tradition and also interacted with the students to inspire them to write their own verse. Rebecca said 'as the Bard I want to encourage the youth of Weymouth to create their own prose'. Peter Roe exclaimed ' I was so impressed with the innovative writing from the students and their freedom of speech.'
A Year 10 pupil said 'I want to aspire to becoming a writer and poet when I am older - my favourite names include Chaucer and Milton'. Mark Chutter, Head of Performing Arts, arranged the workshop said 'my thanks to Peter and Rebecca for such a dynamic session which has empowered our students to be creative and to nurture their intellectual curiosity around words and language'.
